Fossicking in the Northern Territory

Fossicking Area 4 (Warrego) update

17 May 2016

In August 2015 the first of three planned one hectare ‘scrapes’ was completed to revitalise what was thought to be an area depleted of opportunities for detectorists.

As metal detectors can generally only reach a shallow depth the area was ‘stripped’ and then ripped to a depth of about half a metre.

A second scrape was completed in April 2016 with the last one planned for July 2016. Rehabilitation works will also commence on the first area in July 2016 and be completed by mid 2017.

This work should ensure that the detectors will work well and provide increased opportunities for people to find nuggets of gold at Warrego.
Early indications are that a number of nuggets have been found since the area was refreshed.
